  1. While there is a reference to “several theatre” companies in Calgary, that’s an understatement I would like to provide more information about. Calgary has a thriving theatre scene with 40+ professional theatres, many community theatres and new play development that is the envy of theatre artists across Canada. Check out the professional companies by visiting the website of the Betty Mitchell Awards. That’s like Calgary’s Oscars for theatre artists.

The comedy scene here is pretty active, too. Besides comedy clubs, there are comedy improv groups every weekend. Don’t forget, Calgary is the birthplace of Loose Moose, and Keith Johnstone’s methods are now taught across the globe. On most Monday evenings, you can join Dirty Laundry Calgary for improv featuring many professional actors who are appearing in (professional) productions during the week! For example, Karen Johnson-Diamond will be opening “Sequence” with Downstage Theatre in February, but Monday nights she is flying without a script.

Theatre tickets are dirt cheap compared to hockey and concert tickets, and it’s truly a lot of fun. If you’re not sure which production to see, just visit the company website to get a sense of the mandate for each theatre company or send an email. Here are some suggestions – If you like mystery, check out Vertigo. If you’re looking for an hour-long show on your downtown lunchbreak or something at the end of the workday (Fri), visit Lunchbox Theatre. If you like musicals, watch for something at Forte Musical Society. Want a big, huge, sweeping production… try Theatre Calgary. If news and currrent events and controversy interests you, try a show at Downstage Theatre.

    Support Calgary’s vibrant theatre scene!!

Speaking of theaters, we went to see ‘Kung Fu Panties’ at Loose Moose Theatre last night and it was great! Definitely not for the whole family, just us grown ups. 😀
