Construction Now Underway for Seton’s New Recreation Centre
The site of the new Seton Recreational Centre has been busier than ever over the past few months as construction workers prepare to begin actual construction on the building itself.
It is one of three new recreational centres slated for construction in various parts of the city, with another in Quarry Park set to open its doors on July 1st, 2016.
At approximately 330,000 square feet, the massive southeast recreation centre will include much needed amenities such as:
- two multi-purpose ice arenas
- sport and leisure pools
- water park
- steam rooms and hot tubs
- 25,000 square foot public library
- integrated dive tank
- FlowRider surf simulator
- state-of-the-art fitness centre
- three multi-purpose gymnasiums
- art-making studio and gallery space
- daycare and child-minding
- 300 seat performance theatre
- physiotherapy & medical clinic
Once fully operational in 2018, the new Seton Recreational Centre will be operated by the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in partnership with the owner (City of Calgary).
The $193 million price tag has been picked up partially by the City of Calgary’s Community and Recreation Levy ($50 million) and the Government of Alberta’s Municipal Sustainability Initiative ($150 million).
