Stamps Lose
In 1947, the Western Interprovincial Football Union (WIFU) consisted of the Calgary Stampeders, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
During this year the Stampeders played the Blue Bombers in the WIFU final and lost, placing second in the western division and losing their chance to advance to the Grey Cup final.
Home Construction Boom
Between the years of 1947 and 1955 there was over 60,000 homes constructed in Calgary!
In 1947 the discovery of oil in nearby Leduc caused the city to boom, resulting in massive population growth and home construction to accommodate them.
Grand Opportunities
1947 is a very important year in history for the City of Calgary. Don Mackay, the city Mayor at the time, saw the opportunity to promote the city as the new Western frontier, where opportunities were grand.
Today, YYC has an abundance of new job opportunities for people from all walks of life and is an economic strength of Canada.
