History of Calgary – 44 Years of Change!

  • The Husky Tower, later renamed Calgary Tower is completed, becoming the tallest freestanding structure in Canada
  • Eclipsed in height long ago, and more recently by the Bow, the Calgary Tower is still an instantly recognizable Calgary Icon

In 1968, history was made at the Stampede by these noticeable “firsts”

  • Event duration extended to a full 10 days
  • Cocktail Lounge at the Big Four stays problem free the full time of the Stampede
  • The first quarter horse races are held
  • Stampede parade extends its route past a ticket vendor for the event
  • Stampede now is in action on Sundays, where a free grandstand show incited visitor interests to come down to the grounds
