A Quick History of Condominium Law in Alberta

Calgary Condominium LawAlberta was the first province in Canada to pass Condominium legislation. The Alberta legislature passed the Condominium Property Act of Alberta on August 1st, 1966.

In may 1996 the legislature passed the Condominium Property Act amendment Act and then which came into effect on September 1st, 2000.

This major amendment included several updated provisions including the areas of self -policing, increased disclosure obligations, mandatory reserve fund requirements, increased protection for buyers, greater power for boards and additional dispute resolution options!

It is important to know what the Condominium Property Act is because it sets the guidelines for how Condominiums can be sold, managed and the disclosure information that must be available for buyers.
