Ichi Rock Calgary Restaurant Review

Sushi Calgary Ichi Rock Japanese FoodAn izakaya is Japan’s version of a pub serving alcoholic drinks specifically sake and tapa-style appetizers. Ambiance is just as important as the food and beverages for an authentic izakaya experience. Ichi Rock masters this much needed combination.

Despite it being a dark and stormy night, Ichi Rock was packed with a diverse, unassuming crowd: a couple on date night, a group of college students and a table of soccer fans catching a game on the TV screen.

The tiny space is decorated with cherry blossom wall art and hanging funky Ikea-esque lights. The music selection is as captivating as the decor. At any moment, you will be listening to Japanese pop music then transition to the smooth sounds of western R&B.

For the rookies, the menu can appear intimidating at first glance. I suggest the best way to tackle the menu is by sampling and sharing at least one dish from each of the categories.

Some of my Ichi Rock favourites include the takoyaki (deep fried octopus with mayonnaise sauce), gyoza (pork dumplings) and tonkatsu (pork cutlet). Specials like the Unagi Fantasy made with sea crab, avocado and fish roe topped with BBQ eel are a personal must order for me and I highly recommend them for first timers. For those with sushi and sashimi on their mind, you will not be disappointed with their succulent fresh fish. The green tea crème brulee or complimentary frozen grapes are the perfect way to finish off the meal.

With the exception of Sunday, Ichi Rock is open until midnight. If you are yearning a late night snack, check out our list of Calgary Late Night Food Options. Or craving sushi, check out Calgary Best Sushi.
