Calgaryism -  Your source for anything and everything about our city

Cody Battershill I love CalgaryAs a born and raised Calgarian, I have seen this city evolved from a small town into a world-class city. Monumental events like Olympics ’88, conception of the Red Mile and Prince William and Kate Middleton in the Stampede parade really elevated Calgary’s reputation in Canada.

I love all things Calgary – people, neighbourhoods, restaurants, activities and so much more. That is why I created Calgaryism to showcase our awesome city through articles, stories and photos. You can find Calgaryism on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and as its own website www.bestcalgaryhomes.com. We recently celebrated 11,000 like-minded fans on our Facebook page who are also proud to be a citizen of our city.

Calgary has many great achievements and bragging rights. Did you know Calgary is...?

1. Canada’s #1 economic performer and home to a diverse array of industries including energy, finance, manufacturing, construction, transportation and technology.

2. The only province without a sales tax and low federal tax.

3. The first major Canadian city to have a Muslim mayor. Go Mayor Nenshi!!!

4. Increasing rapidly with a 10.9% population growth rate from 2006 – 2011.

Calgaryism Graphic5. Attracting people from other provinces with the largest increase in interprovincial migration.

6. Full of successful and hardworking people with the most millionaires per capita in our country.

7. A young city. In fact, it has the youngest population in Canada with 41% between the ages of 20-44. The average is only 36.

8. A haven for homeowners with the highest percentage of homeownership in Canada.

9. Home to the Plus 15 – the world’s second most extensive pedestrian skywalk.

10. The fortunate recipient of the most Chinook winds in the country due to the Bow Valley in the Canadian Rockies that acts as a natural wind tunnel.

2012 marks a significant year for our city. The Stampede, Calgary Public Library, City of Calgary Recreation, Theatre Junction GRAND and Pumphouse Theatre are all celebrating 100 years of serving Calgarians through entertainment, education, sports, recreation, art and cultural opportunities.

We also hit another milestone this year. The Federal Government named Calgary as the cultural capital of Canada. Kudos to them for recognizing and acknowledging our vibrant and innovative city.

Calgary 2012 is working hard behind the scenes hosting a bunch of events to celebrate this incredible accomplishment. Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming activities!
