Of the top 5 oil suppliers to the Unites States, Canada is the only country to have greenhouse gas emissions regulations in place*.

  • Canada is home to only 0.5 percent of our world’s population and is responsible for only 2 percent of its total GHG emissions.
  • Canada’s oil sands were responsible for 7.8 percent of Canada’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2011. This is approximately 0.1 percent of GHG emissions worldwide.
  • In agreement with the Copenhagen Accord and the USA, Canada has committed to reducing its GHG emissions by 17 percent below levels recorded in 2005 by the year 2020. Canada is currently half way to meeting that commitment.
  • Canada has a strong commitment to keeping its oil and gas sector as environmentally friendly as possible. From 1990 to 2011, the amount of GHG emissions produced per barrel of oil from the oil sands was decreased by 26 percent. Further commitments have been made to reduce this figure even further.
  • GHG released by the State of Alabama’s coal fired power plants are comparable to those released by the oil sands, representing only one thousandth of worldwide GHG emissions.
  • Canada is the only country on Earth that bans coal-fired power plants which are built using out-dated technology.
  • In 2011, GHG emissions from Canada’s oil sands were equal to 4.3 percent of the total GHG released by the coal-fired power plant industry in the USA.
