GlobalFest in Calgary

GlobalFest in CalgaryGlobalFest is coming soon! Get ready to be amazed by this awesome cultural celebration held annually in Calgary. If you thought the Stampede fireworks were impressive, than you will be truly bedazzled by the ones at GlobalFest.

But that’s not all that is happening during GlobalFest. The festival has a number of components including the Chinatown Street Festival, Human Rights Forum and of course, my personal favorite the Fireworks & One World.

History of GlobalFest

The beginnings for the festival began way back in 1993 when The Calgary Fireworks Festival Society was created. The non-profit organization was intent on looking for a launch site suitable for a fireworks show but was unsuccessful for eight years, until 2001 when they found a site in southeast Calgary at Elliston Park.

Eventually the Calgary Fireworks Festival Society partnered up with the International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre to create the top notch celebration of multiculturalism we today know as GlobalFest.

GlobalFest Events

Chinatown Street Festival – If you guessed it would be happening in Chinatown, then you are correct! On Saturday, August 11th from 10:00am to 8:00pm come and join the festivities at the Chinatown Street Festival for free! There will be live multi-cultural entertainment, food and drink taste testing, street retail booths, cultural exhibits, games for everyone and more! Don’t miss out!

Human Rights Forum – A part of GlobalFest concerned with international issues concerning human rights. Human Rights Forum is a way for people to share their experiences, solutions and knowledge in order to address pressing issues such as prejudice, discrimination and racism in a safe and positive atmosphere. Being held from Monday, August 13th to Friday, August 17th from 12:00pm to 1:30pm at the Calgary Public Library at 616 Macleod Trail SE.

Fireworks & One World – One of my favorite parts of GlobalFest as you get to experience all the tastes of a dozen different cultures from all over the world, plus enjoy magnificent displays of fireworks. There’s no better way to have some family fun than experience OneWorld Village with a dozen ethnic food booths, 15 cultural pavilions and 4 performance stages! Incredible! Park opens at 6:00pm, so have your lawn chairs ready and prepare for a lot of fun. August 16th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, 24th and 26th are the dates. Get your tickets now!
