Calgary Transit and C-Train Platform Expansions

Calgary Transit and Recent C-Train Cars / Platform Expansions

Calgary Public Transportation LRT Station SunnysideYou’ve probably already noticed the recent C-Train platform expansions and renovations if you are one of the tens of thousands of people who use Calgary’s light rail system.

The City of Calgary has implemented a plan to expand C-Train cars to four per train instead of three in order to meet the large demand for the transportation. This has also resulted in expansion of station platforms to be able to accommodate the four cars.

Calgary Transit expects the four car trains to be operational sometime in 2014.

Second Busiest Light Rail in North America

According to the American Public Transportation Association’s Light Rail Report, in the first quarter of 2013, Calgary’s C-Train averaged approximately 290,000 users on weekdays - it’s the second busiest light rail system in North America next to Monterrey’s Metro in Mexico!

Having a largely used light rail system in Calgary shouldn’t come as a surprise; our city is one of the most downtown focused cities in North America. See more Downtown Calgary Facts today!

Around 230,000 people work in downtown and according to Calgary Transit, public transportation has become the preferred means of getting there. In 2011, approximately 50 percent of downtown workers used public transportation to get to and from downtown on a daily basis and they speculate that number has only gone up ever since.

What Does it Mean for C-Train Users?

To start, we should take note that there will be no long term gain without any short term pain.

Calgary’s population had a net gain of nearly 20,000 people from April 2012 to April 2013; therefore the C-Train expansion is a must if our cities infrastructure will be able to handle such drastic population growth.

It might be only a minor inconvenience, but after the C-Train’s switch over to four cars and our platforms can accommodate them, there will be much more room for us on the already jam-packed LRT’s.

Give Yourself Some Extra Time

Calgary LRT and Public Transit

Some sections of Calgary’s LRT platforms might be closed off for construction so it’s best to give yourself a few extra minutes if you are a C-Train user.

Even 30 seconds can make a difference in getting to your destination on time as our C-Train’s only stop for 10 seconds at most, and then are on their way.
