What is the GPI?

The Global Peace Index (GPI) is a report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) in accordance with a panel of peace experts from various institutes around the world which is correlated with data collected by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).I love Canada

The annual report was first created back in 2007 and has been released on an annual basis ever since. In 2015, it ranked 162 different countries on a point-scale system using three broad themes:

  • degree of militarization
  • extent of domestic and international conflict
  • level of safety & security in a society

Between the three of these categories are over 20 indicators to evaluate the peacefulness of a country including:

  • Number of external and internal conflicts
  • Number of deaths from organized conflicts
  • Number of homicides per 100,000 people
  • Number of jailed persons per 100,000 people
  • Number of internal security officers and police per 100,000 people
  • Level of perceived criminality in society
  • Relations with neighbouring countries
  • Political instability
  • terrorist activity
  • Level of violent crime

Three major findings of the Global Peace Index include:

#1 - Peace is closely tied to income & education levels and how even these are spread regionally

#2 - Peaceful nations often have much transparency in government and low corruption

#3 - Smaller countries part of regional blocks are often more stable and rank higher

There must be some good things going on in Canada then if our nation has ranked so high on the Global Peace Index of 2015! Way to go Canada!Calgaryism Facebook Instagram Twitter Graphic Join Us
