Canada World’s Most Tolerant Country!

Out of 140 countries, Canada is the World’s most tolerant country - according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development 2011 (highest tolerance of minority groups).

Calgary Diversity - How Diverse is CalgaryCalgary's Own Tolerance

In 2010 Calgary elected the first Muslim Mayor of any major North American City. This fact alone shows just how tolerant Calgary is, a city with over 120 languages spoken and approximately one quarter of the population being foreign born.

Perhaps it’s the large multicultural population in Calgary that makes it such an accepting city.

Those who come here from across Canada and around the world bring with them their traditions, beliefs and experiences, all invaluable to our community.

We would not have been named the Multicultural Capital of Canada in 2012 and wouldn’t have such a rich cultural scene in our city without these amazing people who are as big a part of our community as the locally born and raised!

Another prime example of “tolerant Calgary” would be the accommodations made for Muslim taxi drivers during Ramadan and the 2013 Stampede.

Starting on Tuesday, July 9th, Ramadan is a time of strict fasting for Muslims from sunrise to sunset. Considering that approximately 40 percent of taxi drivers in Calgary are Muslims, the city was worried it would affect taxi services during one of the busiest times of the year.

Therefore they came up with a plan to provide suitable food trucks and prayer tents near the Stampede Grounds at dusk for when fasting is complete.
