We definitely don’t get as much rain as our coastal neighbours of Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia – that’s for sure.
But if Mother Nature does by chance decide to unleash a fury of wetness down upon us, there are plenty of things to do in Calgary on a rainy day despite how terrible the downpour may be.
Here are some of the best indoor activities in Calgary we thought of for those gloomy rainy days. Let us know what your favourites are using the comment section below and we will add them to our list!
Chinatown is one of Calgary’s cultural hot spots located between 4th Avenue and Riverfront Avenue from south to north and 1st Street SW to 1st Street SE from west to east.
This place is riddled with fun things to do on a rainy day including browsing a unique collection of Chinese shops at Dragon City Mall as well as discovering a wide range of foreign foods within the few blocks described above.
Even if you don’t buy anything, this can still be a totally fun cultural experience! One thing to keep in mind is that to get from block to block you will have to cross the street outside so bring an umbrella just in case.

From learning about Chinese history and culture, marvelling at the magnificent artwork, architecture and ancient artifacts found within or perhaps stocking up on exotic candies for the little ones, you’ll have fun participating in these indoor activities when it’s wet outside!

Needless to say, the story of these two groups is incredibly fascinating and can be discovered at the Glenbow Museum’s vast collections separated into four categories: archive, art, library and museum.

Most of us probably already know about the Olympic Oval’s year round public skating.
Yes, I remember the good old days as a youth, grabbing the skating bar and being a little hooligan on the speed-skating track where many world records were set in its days of Olympic glory.
My most recent memories of the Olympic Oval are working out, using the running tracks and every so often, some major car show events or other indoor conventions of the sort.
See the website for a full schedule and details; maybe you’ll be lucky on that next rainy day in Calgary if you don’t feel like a public skate or work out that is.

SPEEDERS Indoor ProKarts
Speeders may very well be the most intense indoor race track in the city. Featuring 100% electric go-karts, this adrenaline-pumping indoor activity will have you going seemingly a million miles an hour against your friends in competitive indoor racing!
Unfortunately if you are under the legal age limit, shorter than 5’1”, weigh more than 300 pounds, have open-toed shoes on or have had a few too many drinks, you won’t be able to race at Speeders that day.
If that’s the case, we recommend you make your way back to this indoor activity gem another day to check out the high-intensity, very fast go kart racing!

The Rec Room
The Rec Room at the recently renovated Deerfoot City Mall is full of hype among people of all ages, and for good reason.
Featuring probably more than 50 arcade games (a guess) in addition to ping pong, shuffle board, virtual reality, pool and snookerboard to name a few, it’s easy to see why The Rec Room is a great place to go on a rainy or snowy day in Calgary for some fun.
There’s also a full serve restaurant and sports bar in addition to a quicker cafe-style concession that serves up craft beer, housemade desserts and several delicious poutines.
Don’t forget to check out the token store and cash in your tokens for rewards after a night of gaming!

The Shooting Edge
For some, there are few things in this world more exhilarating than shooting a gun. And not just any gun, but one (or two, or three) that you choose to fire from a long list of different ones at The Shooting Edge.
This gun range / shop has a great set up where you pay a flat rate to shoot then basically pay for your ammo to fire. You can switch guns as many times as you like to shoot on the range, which is great!
If you’re under age, just make sure you have an adult to accompany you throughout your visit and you’re good to go!

It may already be a given, but heading to one of Calgary’s best shopping malls to pick up what you need is always a good thing to do on a rainy day in Calgary.
Whether it be Market Mall, The Core, or the new Asian-style mega-mall coming soon to the Balzac area, they all are great picks for when the rain is somewhat limiting on what you can do outdoors.
